Italian Language Workshop and Mystery Night

Workshop Description
A fun, educational, and engaging evening designed for intermediate and advanced Italian students who want to practice the language in person, meet new people, and take part in a unique experience.
During the workshop, participants will analyze a mysterious case, learn new Italian verbs and expressions, examine clues and suspects, and work together to identify the culprit.
Students will formulate hypotheses, compare opinions, create dialogues, question the suspects, and present their own solution to the mystery.
The evening will also include language games, group activities, and a break featuring Italian snacks and refreshments. It will be a wonderful opportunity to speak Italian in a relaxed environment, learn, have fun, and connect with the local Italian-learning community.
Evening Schedule
6:00–6:15 PM | Welcome and Icebreaker Activity
- Welcome and introduction of the participants.
- Presentation of the evening’s program.
- A short conversation activity to help everyone get to know one another.
Language objective: Introduce yourself, ask questions, and begin communicating spontaneously in Italian.
6:15–6:35 PM | Introduction to the Mystery
- Introduction to the story and the context of the case.
- First reading of the mystery text.
- Presentation of the characters, suspects, and main events.
- Students share their first impressions and initial hypotheses.
Guiding questions:
- What happened?
- Who are the main characters?
- Which characters seem suspicious?
- What information is still unclear?
6:35–6:55 PM | Mystery Vocabulary, Verbs, and Expressions
A guided exploration of the language needed to understand and solve the case.
Students will learn and use:
- new Italian verbs;
- vocabulary related to crime and investigation;
- expressions for formulating hypotheses;
- phrases for expressing agreement, disagreement, and doubt;
- useful structures for accusing or defending someone.
6:55–7:20 PM | Team Formation and Group Investigation
Participants will be divided into teams. Each group will receive information, witness statements, and clues to analyze.
Participants will need to:
- reconstruct the sequence of events;
- identify possible contradictions;
- distinguish facts from assumptions;
- discuss the possible motive;
- decide which questions to ask the suspects;
- develop their own theory about the case.
7:20–7:35 PM | Italian Break and Community Time
A break featuring Italian snacks, buffet selections, and refreshments.
During the break, students will have the opportunity to:
- speak freely in Italian;
- get to know the other participants;
- informally compare their theories;
- share experiences and interests related to Italy.
This part of the evening is designed to encourage social interaction and create a welcoming sense of community.
7:35–8:00 PM | Dialogue Creation
Each group will prepare short dialogues inspired by the case.
Students may play the roles of investigators, suspects, witnesses, or lawyers.
Language objective: Use the vocabulary and expressions learned during the workshop in a practical and creative communication activity.
8:00–8:30 PM | Mystery Solution and Closing
- Reveal of the real culprit.
- Explanation of the decisive clues.
- Comparison between the correct solution and the theories developed by the teams.
- A symbolic prize for the most convincing investigative team.
- Final greetings and community time.
